Wherever You Are, my love will find you.

This is a beautiful poem written by Nancy Tillman. It also has beautiful pictures to go along with it.

I wanted you more
than you will ever know,
so I sent love to follow
wherever you go.

It's high as you wish it. It's quick as an elf.
You'll never outgrow it...it stretches itself!

So climb any mountain...
climb up to the sky!
My love will find you.
My love can fly!

Make a big splash! Go out on a limb!
My love willl find you. My love can swim!

It never gets lost, never fades, never ends...
if you're working...
or playing...
or sitting with friends.

You can dance 'til you're dizzy...
paint 'til you're blue ...
There's no place, not one,
that my love can't find you.

And if someday you're lonely,
or someday you're sad,
or you strike out at baseball,
or think you've been bad...

just lift up your face, feel the wind in your hair.
That's me, my sweet baby, my love is right there.

In the green of the grass...in the smell of
the sea...in the clouds floating by...
at the top of a tree... in the sound
crickets make at the end of the day...

"You are loved. You are loved. You are loved,"
they all say.

My love is so high, and so wide and
so deep, it's always right there, even
when you're asleep.

So hold your head high
and don't be afraid
to march to the front
of your own parade.

If you're still my small babe
or you're all the way grown,
my promise to you
is you're never alone.

You are my angel, my darling,
my star...and my love will find you,
wherever you are.

You are loved.

Antoinette's Thoughts:
Having children of my own has allowed me to develop a deep appreciation for this poem.  For many of us, we think about a time in life when we will have our first child, and when that day finally comes our lives are forever changed.  Our children become our everything, they become our heart and our love follows them like a never ending shadow.  Love is a word that even when it is unspoken, can be felt in the green of the grass ... in the smell of the sea...in the clouds floating by...at the top of the tree...in the sound crickets make at the end of the day... it is this type of descriptive language that allows our love to live even when we ourselves can no longer continue on.  Within this poem there are several ingredients that come together in order to make this poem a beautiful piece of poetry.  It's as high as you wish it.  It's as quick as an elf  (simile) or, you can dance til you're dizzy...paint til you're blue...(metaphor)

wanted you more
than you will ever know,
so I sent love to follow
wherever you go.

As seen in the stanza above, alliteration is used through the words wanted, will, and wherever in order to explain a love that begins for our children even before the first time we hold them in our arms. In closing, I will make a big splash! in order to show that onomatopoeia exist in this poem as well.

Macy's Thoughts:
I love this poem!  This poem captures the love that a parent feels for a child. The poem basically tells the child that no matter where they are, their parents' love will always find them.  I read this poem to my son regularly, and not once have I made it through the whole poem without crying.  My five-year-old always asks why I get so sad when I read it, but I tell him it that I am not crying because I’m sad, I am crying happy tears because I know that I am so lucky.  So this poem definitely has an emotional impact on readers.
Another element found throughout the poem is personification, and that is basically where you give a non-human object the characteristics of a human.  The most common instance here is where the author gives human qualities to the feeling of love.  For example, she says that love can swim and that love can fly. She also says that love never gets lost, never fades, nor ends.  She also says that the real sound that crickets make at the end of the day is not chirping, but them repeating “you are loved”.
Although each of the stanzas rhymes, the poem does not have a set rhyme scheme. The most common seen pattern is ABCB.  It definitely follows a nice flowing rhythm. Part of this is due to another common poetry element, which is repetition. It repeats several times, “You are loved. You are loved. You are loved.”  In fact, the word love is repeated thirteen times.
I hope everyone enjoys this poem as much as I do.  I talked about the emotional effect it has on me.  But even though I really like the poem, if I did not have a child, the poem would probably not have such a profound effect on me.  Are there any other poems that you have read that make you feel the same way?

  1. I just wanted to add that I got this book as part of the Kohl's Cares for Kids Initiatives for $5. They change the books periodically, like right now I think they are featuring Dr. Suess books. They also usually have a stuffed plush that relates to the book for $5 too. This is a great bargain, and 100% of the money goes to kids' educations. It is a cheap way to add to your book collection and help kids in the process.

  2. I have never heard of this poem, but I loved it! Even though I do not have kids of my own, I do have a great love for them so it touched me like it did you. And Macy, your comment about you crying while you read it made me tear up! Thanks! :) But I do love this poem; I think it has great rhyme, rhythm, and I think it portrays a wonderful meaning of love - which I hope everyone experiences in their life!

  3. I loved reading this poem you posted! Having three children of my own, this poem had an emotional effect on me. I like the theme and the poetry elements the author used. Rhyming poetry has always been my favorite, but the personification and onomatopoeias helped me visualize it, making it more meaningful. I can't wait to read it to my children!

  4. I have read poems that have had the same effect on me! When you read something that you can connect to it makes it so much better to read it again and again and even share it with others. I really liked reading both of your thoughts on this poem because I can see that you have amazing connections with your children and that is such a great bond to have... the love between a mother and her child. You are both lucky to have children that you can care for and love unconditionally...even when they mess up, say the wrong things in public, or even break your most precious item whatever it may be. Your love will always follow your children and this poem was a great example for you guys to blog about!

  5. I love the poem you two have chosen and your responses! I do not have kids of my own but I do know the love my parents have for me is unconditional and words cannot explain! This poem would be great to use when schools do Character Education Word of the Week. The teacher or a student could read the character Word of the Week and its defintion, then read and discuss "Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You."

  6. I own this book and I love it sooo much. It's VERY special to me. My grandmother gave it to my son on his first Christmas. She was dying of ovarian cancer and was like a mother to me. I felt like the book was secretly for me. Like even though she was about to die her love will find me.I cry so hard when I read this book to my children.

  7. Beautiful expression of the love brought forth through the gift of life granted by God. Children are treasured for a lifetime, no matter how much they grow, how tall they are or how far away from home they live; always forever a part of who we are as mothers.

  8. Thank you for posting this, I have been trying to find this everywhere but could not remember the name. I first learned of this book when someone donated it to the daycare I work at. The first time I read it I just cried because it reminded me of the baby I miscarried at four months, right after we discovered we were having a baby girl. This poem touches my heart because even though she is not here, she will always be my baby girl and i still love her with all my heart. So Noa Grace, my love will always find you, even if I haven't had the chance to meet you yet.

    1. It's funny the other day while at the doctor with my 6 year old daughter chose this book first to read......the cover had dolphins that was my mom's favorite animal, unexpectedly my mom passed away this past December 2017. While this past week was stressful going to doctors going to hospital and urgent care I felt like I have been missing my mom more knowing i didn't have her help and wisdom with whats going on....once I seen this book with the dolphins I knew my mom was with me but when I opened the book to the first page and started to read it oh my.....did I start crying like a baby because right then and there did I know my mom was with me.....and my daughter turns and says mommy are you having a moment? That day I went to the book store to buy that book so I can pass it on to my daughter and hopefully one day to her children.....

  9. For friends who have a faith in God, these same truths are shared in scripture of God's love to us. From Psalm 103, we find in verse 8 that God's Love is abounding; verse 11, it is as high as the heaven; verse 17, it is from everlasting to everlasting; verse 8, the Lord is compassionate and gracious and slow to anger, abounding in love. Finally Ephesians 3:18 tells us that Christ's love is wide and long and high and deep. As parents and grandparents, may we share a godly and Christ like love to our families, friends, and neighbors. Our world certainly needs that kind of love today.
